The Power of On-The-Job Training in Performing Arts
West End Kids prides itself on offering a unique, one-of-a-kind training program in the UK and possibly worldwide. Our approach is not about exams and grades; it’s about real-world, on-the-job training that prepares young performers for the stage. In this post, we’ll explore the numerous benefits of our distinctive method, contrasting it with traditional examination-based systems, and explain why this hands-on experience is invaluable for aspiring professional performers.
The Unique Approach of West End Kids
Our program at West End Kids is designed to immerse young performers in the realities of professional performing arts. Unlike traditional education, which often emphasises exams and grades, our training focuses on practical experience and real-world application. Exams and grades certainly have their place in motivating young performers, but we believe that if a performer needs such artificial motivation, they are not on track for a professional career. No audition panel will ever ask to see your certificates. The standards strived for in exams often do not align with industry realities and carry little value beyond being motivational tools. Although radically altered, the West End Kids approach is akin to the old repertory system, where actors learned their craft through continuous performance in a variety of roles and settings.
Benefits of On-The-Job Training
1. Real-World Experience:
Performing regularly in front of live audiences helps our students develop stage presence and confidence. They learn how to handle the pressures of live performance, adapt to different venues, and engage with diverse audiences.
2. Immediate Application of Skills:
Instead of waiting for an exam to showcase their abilities, our students apply what they learn immediately. This continuous practice helps them refine their skills quickly and effectively.
3. Enhanced Learning and Retention:
Learning in preparation for performance is highly effective. The need to deliver a polished performance motivates students to practice diligently and retain what they learn. There’s a good reason why audition and college panels tell us that they can always spot someone trained at West End Kids, due mainly to their extraordinary pick-up and audition abilities.
4. Professionalism:
Our students learn the importance of punctuality, responsibility, and teamwork. They understand that every member of the troupe plays a crucial role in the success of a performance.
5. Networking Opportunities:
Performing at high-profile events and venues offers our students invaluable networking opportunities. They meet industry professionals, which can open doors for future opportunities. Many Troupe members who have performed at high profile events and festivals (E.G West End LIVE) have returned as professionals later in life.
6. Resilience and Adaptability:
The dynamic nature of live performances and, more importantly – preparing for performances at the highest of standards teaches resilience and adaptability. This can not be emphasised enough. Students learn to handle unexpected challenges gracefully, a crucial skill in any career.
Contrasting with Exams and Grades
Traditional performing arts education often focuses on exams and grades, which we believe can be limiting. Exams test knowledge at a single point in time, while grades provide a snapshot of performance within a controlled environment, to the standards set by a adjudicator or syllabus. In contrast, our on-the-job training method provides continuous weekly assessment and daily improvement. Students receive real-time feedback from the creative team and audiences, helping them grow consistently.
Links to the Repertory System
The repertory system, once a cornerstone of theatrical training, involved actors performing various roles in different plays over a short period. This method provided actors with diverse experiences, honing their craft through constant practice. At West End Kids, our students gain a broad range of experiences by performing in various productions, from musicals to corporate events and public performances. While we aren’t overly traditionalist, we believe that the standards in professional productions were higher when the repertory system was the primary training ground for aspiring performers.
A Bold Belief: Thriving Without Performing Arts University
At West End Kids, we believe that a successful career in the performing arts doesn’t necessarily require a degree from a performing arts university. While formal education has its benefits, our program shows that real-world experience, dedication, and passion can be equally, if not more, effective. We can prepare a young performer for a professional career by the age of 16 or 18. However, we recognise that in today’s society, which often values degrees and where many parents attended university themselves, this traditional path remains the norm.
Since we started out in 2001, West End Kids has always been committed to providing a training program that goes far beyond current traditional methods. Our on-the-job training approach equips young performers with the skills, confidence, and professionalism needed to succeed in the performing arts. By focusing on practical experience, we prepare our students for the real world, ensuring they are ready to shine on any stage.
One student at a time and with great care and attention, West End Kids exists to inspire the next generation of motivated and ambitious young performers to reach new heights and achieve their dreams.
